RE: Assembly Vote on SB 49
Hi Folks:
The big question of the day is.....Will the State Assembly vote in favor of putting
their campaign contributions on the Internet? We will soon find out! SB 49/Karnette,
a bill that would mandate the electronic filing of, and Internet access to political
disclosure records will be taken up by the California State Assembly either today,
September 8th or tomorrow, September 9th.
Those of us who have been involved with this legislation are on the edge of our seats
as we wait to see if SB 49 will get the necessary 54 votes required to pass. SB 49
is currently on the Assembly Third Reading calendar, and is file item 195. There
are at least 40 Senate bills that will be taken up before SB 49, so it is impossible
to know when the SB 49 floor debate and vote will occur. Assemblyman Jim Cunneen
(R-Cupertino) will be the floor jockey for the bill. The Assembly went into session
this morning at 11 a.m. and is supposed to stay in session for the rest of the day.
You may be able to watch the floor vote on the California Channel, depending on when
SB 49 will be taken up. CalChannel is planning live Assembly floor coverage today
until 1:30 p.m., and then tomorrow, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Below is an excellent column by Dan Weintraub of the Orange County Register, which
ran in yesterday's paper. Look in today's San Francisco Examiner for another story
on SB 49 by Bob Salladay.
As always, I will be sure to notify CVF-NEWS subscribers of any new developments.
We will also put out to CVF-NEWS the results of the Assembly floor vote.
Stay tuned!
