RE: Governor Wilson to SIGN SB 49!!

GREAT NEWS! ! ! I just heard from a very good source that Governor Wilson is planning to sign SB 49 into law! I don’t know exactly when he will sign the bill -- it is likely that there will be a signing ceremony here in Sacramento over the weekend, perhaps Saturday afternoon.

With the governor’s signature, California will have enacted a mandatory electronic filing and online disclosure system for California political disclosure records. SB 49 will require digital disclosure by 1998 statewide campaigns raising or spending $100,000 or more, and for all candidates raising or spending $50,000 in the 1999-2000 cycle. The bill also requires electronic filing and online disclosure of reports filed by lobbying groups, political parties, political committees, slate mailer organizations and major donors.

I know many of the journalists who are subscribed to CVF-NEWS are planning to write stories about this landmark legislation, and I will be sure to keep you posted as the details become available. Should the signing ceremony take place over the weekend, I will put the details about where and when on the CVF voicemail message, which you will be able to access by calling our office at 916-325-2120. I will be checking my voicemail over the weekend, so feel free to leave a message if you want to reach me. The California Voter Foundation will also be issuing a news release on the day the bill is signed, and I will email that out to CVF-NEWS as soon as it is appropriate.

Congratulations again to everyone who worked so hard on this issue!
