CHENNAI: The 49 O' option, which gives a voter the choice of not voting for any candidate, will be not be included in electronic voting machines (EVMs) before the upcoming assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.

yes, it is not coming and politicians did not want it also. The people's demand for the provision of a separate button was particularly raised during last election itself, since the ruling party goons distributed money and threatened poor people that they can ''find whom they had voted'' from the booth ''camera'' (there was nothing like that last time) etc! The signing in separate register in public would expose the voters to the agents of parties in the booth and invite trouble for them!

Later came a more diabolical idea, in the wake of complaints that the EVMs did not register the actual candidate voted for, but accounted all votes in favour of ruling party in some machines! There was immediately a mischivous suggestion to issue ''slips'' to voters showing the party they had voted for! The EC also agreed to consider it! This method would make it easy for the party men to demand the slip from the voters whom they had paid money!

It is open secret particularly in Tamilnadu that money and muscle power are unleashed during elections, nearly by all parties according to their capacity and the ruling one has the worst record of voter bribes and threats! It is unfortunate that our EC is unable to implement any viable reform except to think in the lines of parties - the ruling ones in particular!

What happens if the police / fire department / paramedics only speak English, and the person they are helping doesn't? What happens if politicians print one message in one language, and a different spin in another? We need a standardized language like English, or even dual languages like English and Spanish. This has to be decided, it is necessary for government function.
