Registering To Vote

William Said:

Not showing up to vote on election day after registering?

We Answered:

As a qualified Election Inspector of some 30 years, and speaking from the State of new York, there was a time, long ago, if you missed 4 (annual) general elections in a row, your name was purged, because we didn't know if you had moved, died, or what have you. They have since relaxed these rules, and there are names on the roll that we have not seen, or heard from, in years.
Your best bet would be to check with your local Board of Elections.

Ross Said:

Does registering to vote put you on the jury duty list?

We Answered:

Yes

Nicholas Said:

What are the benefits of not registering to vote?

We Answered:

Well, in some states, you may not be called for jury duty.

But many states are now using utility companies' lists to get their potential jurors.

I guess another benefit is that you don't have to keep up with what's going on on the political scene, because if you're not voting, then why even bother with keeping up with the issues.

Louis Said:

What is the difference in registering to vote as an independent verses undeclared?

We Answered:

It depends on your State. Call the County Clerk's office and get all the details.

Andre Said:

What are the benefits/drawbacks to registering as a specific party when registering to vote?

We Answered:

There is no drawback or benefit. You can vote for whoever you want in the general election. I am fortunate to live in a state where party is not even an issue. Most party registration is for the primaries anyways.

Leona Said:

What would some cons be to having a basic civics test before registering to vote?

We Answered:

That would change it from "one man one vote" to "one man, maybe a vote"
Any test to limit the citizens who can vote goes against the American spirit of equality of all citizens.
