2010 Ca Governor Candidates

Jean Said:

Repubs, review of the Senate seats you expect to pick up. If you disagree, I'd love to hear it (long post)?

We Answered:

Republicans will pick up Arkansas, Colorado, North Dakota and Nevada at least, and have good shots in Pennsylvania and California and possibly (gasp!) New York.

You forgot to mention Arkansas. Blanche Lincoln is unpopular, and her vote on the Health Care bill sealed her fate against virtually any Republican challenger.

You also forgot to mention Colorado. Michael Bennett -- appointed to replace Ken Salazar -- is up for election. (He says he is running for "re-election" but he was never elected.) He is not particularly popular in Colorado and he has never been elected to any office at all -- not even dogcatcher. Several popular Republicans (including former Governor Bill Owens and the current Attorney General) have indicated interest in running against him. He will lose to either of them.

Nevada. Harry Reid is extremely unpopular and is losing in the polls to both of his two most likely opponents. Harry is dead. He will not be re-elected.

North Dakota. No doubt about this one. The state went heavily Republican in 2008, and Dorgan won as a conservative.

Pennsylvania. Spector was leading in the polls, but his lead is slipping. He faces a strong primary challenge, and a strong challenge in the general election. He is old and pompous, and is not a very good campaigner. Republicans hate him and Democrats don't like him much either.

New York. Gillibrand will get the Democratic nomination. Pataki is considering a run against her. Pataki was a popular governor and well-liked. Gillibrand will lose if Pataki runs.

California. California is generally a blue state, but not so much now, and Boxer is a very weak candidate. In the May 2009 election, Californians revolted against the Democratic establishment and voted down a proposed tax increase by more than 20 points. Boxer is not liked or respected in California. Her likely opponent is Carly Fiorina, the former President of Ebay. She is a good speaker, and very well financed. This will be an uphill battle for the Republicans, but they could win against a candidate as vulnerable as Boxer.
