Cooley is respected in Los Angeles, and will probably be able to remain DA as long as he wants, but the DA's office in LA County is a non-partisan office, so he does not have to run with the Republican label. LA County is heavily Democratic, although he did far better in LA County than most Republicans would. Whether the GOP has a viable shot at statewide office in the future may depend upon the result of recent electoral changes in the CA primary system which could result in more moderate Republicans being nominated.

Chavez is trying make it illegal for anyone else to run for his position. He has been doing this for a long time and any serious candidates have been put in jail or leave the country. He is also seizing control of any outlet that can criticize him. Book burnings can't be too far away.
