Can someone please point me to the provision in the City Charter that authorizes the City to butt into any lawsuit, anywhere in America, to file an amicus brief?Here’s why I ask:City Council Members Garcetti, Reyes, Alarcon and Hahn have made a motion, scheduled for a vote today, to spend your tax dollars, and tie up your City Attorney’s time, to research, write and file an amicus brief in a lawsuit filed by MALDEF in Arizona against that state’s new immigration law.
This strikes me as an improper expenditure of tax dollars. Your City taxes are supposed to be used for the City, not to provide “free” lawyers to special interest groups embroiled in litigation in other states.
Come to think of it, taxpayers can, I believe, file lawsuits to stop improper expenditures of City tax funds. . . . If this motion passes, the City might just find itself a defendant in a taxpayer lawsuit to block this improper use of our tax dollars.
