Because some people can't separate a vicious murderer and his pals from the religion they supposedly follow.

In the same fashion, there are people who can't distinguish an actor from the part he plays. I'm sure Leonard Nimoy (from Star Trek) gets called "Spock" all the time.

People divorce themselves from reality all the time - even if that means divorcing themselves from the principles that they are supposedly upholding.

I'm from Canada, (Calgary), and there are lots of Muslims in my area. They have never done any harm to me. I can walk down the street, ride the train, and go about my daily life without fear of being harmed.

Canada lost a couple of dozen of our citizens on 9/11. It wasn't only the USA that was harmed. The media bears a lot of responsibility by focusing people's attention on the crazies out there that aren't paying attention to religion - they just want to kill people. Look at the statistics - Americans are killing Americans at a higher rate than Muslims are. Who's the bigger threat?

But to toss aside your Constitution because some people who dress differently, look different, and speak a different native tongue, want to build a place of worship, is plain old wrong. It's the bigots who try to keep that kind of silliness going who are keeping the problem going - not the Muslims.
