There's certainly a danger of it, in some cases without having to field a third party candidate. For example, Hayworth has forced John McCain to run so far to his right in order to win the Republican primary that he's created tons of political fodder for his potential Democratic opponents. While he still polls better against potential opponents than Hayworth, not nearly as well as McCain would normally be expected to and the political ads featuring him making direct contradictory statements for political expediency will flood the airwaves.Will he lose the seat? Probably not. But the fact that it's plausible in the current political climate tells you something about the effect of the Tea party on the Republican party.
