Right now, the numbers are not looking good for the Republicans to take control in 2010.To regain control of the House would require a swing of about 40 seats. That would be on the very upper end of the range for a typical off-year election.
To regain control of the Senate would require winning 29 of the 36 elections. Given where the races are, it is slightly more likely that Republicans will lose Senate seats in 2010.
As to 2012, there will be redistricting after the 2010 census. Until we know which states will be gaining seats and which states will be losing seats, it is almost impossible to project the likely results in 2012 for the House. However, it is unlikely that the Republicans will regain the Senate before 2014.
Right now the Republican problem is that there better candidates for the general can't win the nomination as far as the Presidential race.
Overall, however, what happens in the next three election cycles will be more about how President Obama does than anything that the Republicans do.
