Marine Corps Officer Candidate School

Dana Said:

when and how do i apply to marine corps officer candidate school?

We Answered:

"Marine" is always capitalized, the Marines don't have OTS (it's OCS, in Quantico VA), and you do not want to talk to a recruiter. In fact, if you have a degree the recruiter will turn you away. You need to find your local Officer Selection Officer (see the link I am including below) and you should have done this three years ago; if you haven't talked to an OSO then you don't even know if you meet all the requirements to even go to OCS. It's not too late by any means though.

You should be well familiar with the physical requirements at this point. I'm sure you can pass the PFT, but passing isn't good enough for OCS. You need to run at LEAST a 250, and preferably a 275. You definitely should be runnning 3 miles in 21 minutes or faster -- if not, OCS is going to be painful!
You will get endless advice about conditioning, but the best thing is to start working out with the OSO -- he/she should have some kind of PT program going already that will give you an idea of what's expected. If nothing else do lots of pull-ups, run hills, run distance (up to 7 miles), and so some speedwork. (Hiking with a pack wouldn't hurt either.)
Finally consider the weather -- Fall is the ideal time to go to OCS. If you're from a mild climate and go to OCS in the summer, you might be in for a real shock. The heat and humidity in the summer put a lot of stress on the body. If you can train to deal with this, great; I'm just saying think about it because people do get sent home for being heat casualties.
Finally, if it all comes together and you do become an officer candidate, do your homework about the officer MOSs. There are not a lot to choose from in the Marines, and there is no guarantee that you will get your top choice, so you should identify at least five that you are interested in.
Good luck.

Marine Corps officer candidate school and applying to the USMC as an officer?

We Answered:

Gunnery Sergeants... Keep in mind that until you graduate you are NOTHING (from the civilian side, MECEPs might be a different story at the 6 week program) and they are one tough intimidating Senior NCO... Btw, any 2LT who tried getting back at his Drill Instructor would get his *** chewed out from his superiors and find himself out of the Marine Corps. Senior NCO-Junior Officer relationships don't work as you think they do.

What workouts do you do at Marine Corps Officer Candidates School?

We Answered:

Runs

3-5 mile runs.

Humps

Aka hikes, with up to 80 pound packs. 4, 6, 9, and finally 12 mile hikes.

PPPA: Push/Pull/Press/Abs

PPPA is often an addition to a run or another workout. This was the only workout that pushed me to my full physical limit. Know your weaknesses, right?

First, pushup/pull-up supersets. For example, 10 pulls, 25 pushes, 8 pulls, 20 pushes, 6 and 15. The numbers increase each time you do it. By week 8 or 9, I believe it’s something like pull-ups: 16/14/12 and pushups 45/40/35. Ouch.

Ammo can press/crunch supersets come next. I think the ammo cans are 20 or 30 pounds each (full of sand.) This is a great preparation for the CFT and PFT. These are timed events, so you end up doing about 2 min/1.5/1 minute for ammo can presses, alternating with crunches of about the same time.

Fartleks

Fartleks are 3-5 mile runs, interspersed with workouts every half mile or so. Fartleks are very similar to the Run Course/Mec Weight (or something like that) where you just don’t run as far, and do more workouts. An awesome cardio workout.

Example exercises: Pushups, pull-ups, crunches, sit-ups, frog sit-ups (wide knees like you’re doing a groin stretch), diamond pushups, body squats, bend and thrusts, burpees, dips, mountain climbers, sprints

Marine Corps Officer Candidate School?

We Answered:

There are DIs at OCS, they're called Sergeant Instructors (SIs) . SIs are former USMC DIs. I don't know who does the TV pitches.

I am 30. Am I too old for Marine Corps Officers Candidate School?

We Answered:

Unless you are prior service, you are beyond the age limit for the Marines Occ. The age limit is 28.

You are within the age limits for Army OCS and Air Force Ots. My understanding is that the avg Gpa for Marines Occ has been around 2.8 and for Army OCS around 2.4.Usaf Ots has been as competitive as Navy Ocs.
