"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
As President Obama said the Constitution is a document that tells the government what it can not do. It does not tell the PEOPLE what they can not do. This clause in the First Amendment only tells the government that it can not create a state religion like the Church of England. The clause also states that the government can not prohibit the free exercise of religion. In essense it is saying that the government must keep its hands off of religion. It can not deny anyone the right to practice their religion in any way they see fit. In other words, if my child wants to pray in school, he or she can do so. And no one can tell him not to. So there is a separation of the State from practicing religion or supporting a particular religion.
