If people know he was reenacting WWII then why the big deal? Seriously the answer is now, are all the people who dress up like Confederates in a Civil War reenactment actual Confederates? If someone likes to go out as a devil on Halloween, does that make them a Satanist. I saw this interview on CNN and the reported didn't seem to understand the mere fact that he was reenacting. You also make a good point on actors who ever played Nazis or Hitler on TV and movies.
