I consider it hypocrisy, but in my experience, darling, Cuban immigrants think of themselves as different (and, in many cases, better) than other immigrants since they all claim to be fleeing "political oppression" rather than seeking any economic opportunities, regardless of the fact that it's economic opportunity that drives them here just like everybody else. They generally don't see themselves as illegal immigrants, and the longstanding US policy of instant legitimacy for Cuban immigrants but not for other groups promotes this idea.

This attitude of separateness keeps him from in any way identifying with other immigrant groups and makes him able to justify holding positions like this to himself.

It's also why Cuban-Americans vote Republican when most other immigrants lean Democratic.
