Well, I live in the south, and I am black, so I'll tell you my POV.

Yes, there are a lot of conservative republican religious people where I live, but not all of them are racist. A lot of them are actually nice people.
I have never seen anyone who has openly stated that they believe in segregation, but by the way a lot of blacks behave down here, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of whites and even other non-black races wished segregation was still around...
But if you "act white" (don't have a ghetto accent, listen to rock/pop/country, dress respectfully, make good grades, etc.) like I do, people love you. However, they will stereotype you before getting to know you as a person.
There are tons of non-religious people too, and liberal Christians, as well as people of other relgions here. I think it's pretty diverse. My school was mostly liberal, and the colleges are extremely liberal around here. Many gays proudly express their orientation and have overwhelming support. Most of the younger generation doesn't have your typical southern accent.

Still, the over all vibe here is pretty country conservative... Unless you go to the city areas. Very quiet. People tend to keep to themselves.
