Reginald Said:
Will you vote and if so what will be your reasoning for voting the way you do?We Answered:
I expect I will vote. I don't think my vote has ever made a difference though, because of the first past the post system. I have always lived in safe seats. Giving Labour's Frank Dobson a majority of 20,001 instead of 20,000 did little to defeat Thatcher. Nor was there any point voting against him in the same constituency, when I tired of Labour and Tony Blair. This time I would like to see the Conservatives gain some ground in Scotland, but now I live in the only safe Westminster they have there.
Voting for an independent might be a good protest. I think there's going to be a lot of protest votes this time, most of them unfortunately wasted. The Esther Rantzens of this world may cause the odd upset, but nationally it will still boil down to the same slug-out between the two big parties.
Sorry to sound so negative. On a positive note - the coming election will be the most uncertain and the most interesting within living memory, even if public esteem of politicians and their parties is at an all-time low.
