Biodiversity by definition means a variety of life: the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part.

Biodiversity should be conserved because each species plays a role in its ecosystem. As species become extinct, the equilibrium or balance within the ecosystem is altered. Eventually, these alterations could have a negative impact on human life on this planet.

Sounds cool, very ambitious. But there's no chance of this ever being complete within our lifetime, so many different species, esp the really small one and the very hidden one and all of them are constantly evolving. Then there's the whole debate about if viruses count (I say they do).
