Importance Of Conservation Of Natural Resources

Betty Said:

What do Canadians think of US ban on raw ivory from Canada?

We Answered:

Maybe I'm missing something but the way I read that law, it is illegal to import RAW ivory into the USA.

Two points:

Inuit art is not raw ivory, it has been processed and carved into something, such as a statue, knife hilt, jewelry, etc.

Canada's Inuit tribes (or any other manufacturers here) do not use African elephant ivory, but rather walrus ivory.

And technically, since Canada does "produce" the walrus ivory (the Inuits use the tusks from walruses that are caught for food, fuel, clothing, etc), it should therefore be allowed.

Canada has its own laws against the import of elephant ivory, and people from USA and Canada have had unexpected run-ins about the law every once in a while. I remember hearing about a man who had a century old piano in his family, that belonged to his great-grandmother. When they were moving to Canada, it was a big surprise when they found out there family heirloom had been confiscated at the border because of its ivory keys. They had to produce all sorts of historical documents to try and prove that the piano had been in the family for generations and get it exempt from the law regarding products made from endangered species.

If in doubt, I would say check with US Customs and Border Protection for the legality of purchasing First Nations art (made with walrus ivory) here in Canada and bringing it to the USA.

Why do we need to conserve our natural resources?

We Answered:

They won't last for ever if we continue to use them up and they have an important role in maintaining life as we know it as well as biodiversity, an invaluable resource.

why are "we, the people of the U.S." doing this?

We Answered:

I agree. We should not be spending money to clean uo the oil spill off Lebanon, when that was a conflict between Israel and Lebanon, with Syria supporting Hezbolleh,a terrorist organization.Their bombs and missiles caused untold damage to Israel and Lebanon and Hezbolleh should be the one's to clean up the oil spill mess, not American monies. Why do we have to come in and clean up after everyone else makes a mess and yet we are blamed for it all..when we do so much good also? We should not be giving any funds to Lebanon,we should pull our troops out of Iraq also and start rebuilding our own damaged infrastructure[roads, bridges, etc] and the Gulf Coast affected by Hurricane Katrina. Also start to build the wall along the Mexico border so we can curb the immigration problem. We have problems right here in our own borders..and we need to address those first..only when we have done enough for our own citizens and made them feel secure and safe again, can we give aid to others again.

Theodore Roosevelt - ?

We Answered:

Teddy was a liberal Republican. Certainly President Bush and his followers did not feel this. I think it will change back under President Obama.
