I'd agree with Shandra....the internal combustion engine has changed somewhat in the last 100 years but the basic design is very wasteful. Only 30 percent or so of the fuel that is burned goes into making power...the other 70 percent is wasted in the form of heat lost in the cooling system and out the tailpipe.We have basically wasted 70 percent of fossil fuels used in vehicles in the last century with little effort made to improve on this.
One inventor, among others, came up with a method to extract this lost energy by adding two more strokes to the normal four stroke process and water to create steam. It's called a six stroke engine.

Smokey Yunick of racing fame worked on an adiabatic engine a couple decades ago but not much interest was generated.

So long as oil remains fairly cheap, there seems to be little incentive to improve on existing designs for the sake of conservation. It will take much higher, consistent prices to generate a paradigm shift in the way we think about oil, energy and conservation as people in Europe do now but some gains have been made since last summer's high oil prices. One fairly new technology called the TDP process offers a way to create oil from waste products and garbage which we have plenty of every year...almost 2 billion tons are produced in the US alone and expected to double by 2030. With this process, we could eliminate importing any oil and supporting some regimes which are not friendly to us or simply to be energy independant and clean up our environment to boot. The problem is that oil speculators would not be able to generate huge profits from this so it will probably not go over well with oil companies and the stock market. We need government leaders who realize that steady and stable rates for energy are in our vital national economic interests and are willing to institute plans and methods to achieve this. The Department of Energy was instituted back in 1977 by Jimmy Carter for the purpose of getting this country energy independant and has spent billions of dollars since then...what do we have to show for 32 years of spending and 100,000 employees? Not very much.

Making oil conservation a way of life is in truth a very simple concept. The simplest way to do this is to cut down on your use of cars. Bike, walk, rollerblade, skateboard, or run to your destination. Not only does it conserve oil but it gives you exercise as well. Another way to make oil conservation a part of life is to choose materials other than plastic which uses crude oil for household items; you should also use cloth or paper bags instead of plastic bags when shopping. One very simple way to conserve oil is to use a push lawn mower as opposed to a gas using one that uses up oil inn a way which is very easily avoidable. While we're on the topic of gardening studies show that chemical fertilizers use fossil fuels in the process of making the fertilizer. Therefore one way to not use oil is to use organic fertilizer which includes the basic household foods of fruit peels, bread crusts, and coffee grinds. I hope now that it is clear that making oil conservation a way of life is simple and that by doing even one of these suggestions you will be preserving one of the earths most precious and diminishing commodities.

It already is. You and I (and everybody else) conserve oil because it costs money. It will continue to go up in price and the likes of you and me will be even more motivated to conserve.
