sorry man...i find it nearly impossible to use litres....i'm american so i don't know that..plus i have no idea how much i use...but we are cutting down on water by taking shorter showers...and making sure the faucet is off when not used....

Jorge Said:

what are the steps to be taken to conserve the rain water under or over the earth' soil?

We Answered:

WATERHARVESTING

the natural way of nature is to evaporate moisture for clouds and this gets blown to places with less water any way ,what obstruct the clouds from getting to deserts ,tend to be mountains that are in the way,
but generally speaking ,the normal weather patterns spread rain evenly over the planet to balance out the temperatures and humidity.

As far as catching rain is concerned ,we do this all the time ,and have done so already since Babylonian times, and is a part of the more advanced Agriculture, that existed with the Egyptians,Central ,and south American indigenous peoples, and many others ,today we call this water harvesting.

In Permaculture the rule is to harvest water to the point of Zero runoff.
this means that all of the rain that falls on an area is absorbed by the terrain and not a drop leaves it.

by building dams, ponds or swales, with interconecting ditches,
if there are enough of these ;the places ,where before the rain water ran over the ground into the rivers and on to the sea ,(in a matter of hours or days),It now runs into absorbant dams or swales and saturates the ground and eventually reaches subteranean water deposits ,taking many months to do so.
Or it fills up ponds that can be used for Aquaculture.
And so a convex situation that repels water is transformed in a concave ,absorbant one and turning the area in to a sponge.

in Spain and Portugal ,which still display many examples of the conquering Moorish influence,One can find many remnants of Waterharvesting, such as aquaducts and tanks underneath the patios ,which collect the rain water from the roofs ,to be used in dryer times.

in Arabia ,on a large scale ,land has been shaped to catch and lead, rain water into sandy areas or to agricultural lands.sand is almost as good as dams because it absorbs water and holds it.

Why is groundwater overused?

We Answered:

Groundwater is overused due to overpopulation in certain areas where the water supply is limited and due to lack of conservation. An area may have plenty of groundwater below it, however not all of it may be use-able. Groundwater near the surface is more susceptible to anthropogenic pollutants, but deeper groundwater is generally older and may be brine water.

The ways to conserve groundwater are teh same as conserving any water supply. These are just the ones off the top of my head, I'm sure there are lots more:

-Making sure there are no plumbing leaks, leaky faucets can add up to a lot of water wasted.
-Chose toilets that are low flow (I like the toilets with 2 flush options) Some people like to take on the motto If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it done. I personally have not yet embraced that motto yet.....
-When you replace appliances chose water efficient ones.
-Take short showers instead of baths
-Landscape your yard so that it is conducive to the environment and climate you live in. Having a lush green yard in the desert southwest just does not make sense. Chose native plants, they will do much better and should not require watering, no matter where you live.
-If possible, use household gray water to water your landscaping. Grey water is water that has been used for for showers, laundry, etc. (basically any water other than toilet water.)
-And of course, try to minimize the anthropogenic sources of contaminants that threaten our water supplies. Support efforts to ban products like MTBE (a gasoline oxidizer, which in small amounts can destroy a water supply. Ethanol can be used in its place, and I believe it is the oxidizer used in most of the midwest)

steps to conserve water?

We Answered:

Hi!
There are 49 ways listed on here.
http://www.americanwater.com/49ways.htm

And I found some more on treehugger.com

1. If your toilet was installed before 1992, add a toilet dam to reduce the amount of water flowing out of it by 35 percent and still leave it functioning properly. (Never use a brick to displace water in the tank, because it can deteriorate and clog your pipes.)

2. If possible, replace your old toilet with a modern low-flush one. While using only about half the water of old-style toilets, most newer models are now highly efficient.

3. Install a low-flow showerhead to reduce your shower water use by 20 to 60 percent.

4. Put aerators on all your faucets. They reduce the amount of water but add air bubbles to the flow remains lively. This way you can reduce your household water flow by two gallons a minute.

5. Check your pipes and water equipment for leaks, which can waste thousands of gallons of water a year.

6. Purchase water-saving appliances, such as front-loading washing machine and low-water-use dishwasher, and wash only full loads.

7. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Fill the basin for washing or shaving.

8. Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl, and fill you sink to wash and rinse dishes, instead of running the water.

9. Landscape your property using native plants appropriate to your climate, so that they won't require excessive watering and will retain soil moisture.

10. Use a rain barrel to collect water from your roof's downspout to irrigate your garden.

11. Sweep, rather than spraying down, your driveway and sidewalk.

Basically, just be aware of how much water you use and alternate ways you can do things to conserve this precious resource.

Good luck!

What steps are YOU taking to conserve your water use?

We Answered:

My entire community has reduced water usage by 1/3 !!! That's nothing short of a miracle. We don't wash our cars.We wait until it rains and then we go out, soap them, and let mother nature rinse them. We catch the cold water at the beginning of a shower/bath and the cold water that comes out of the tap when doing dishes (by hand) and use that water outside. If we do hand washing we cart the rinse water outside..... We observe the 4 hour watering window that we have one day each week..... unless Mother Nature waters for us. We're not using automatic sprinkler systems. Dishwashers if used are FULL. We do only full loads of laundry. It's working.

Discuss It!
