Tips To Conserve Water

Tammy Said:

How can my family and I go green, or eco friendly? Does any one have any tips?

We Answered:

Besides the obvious answers, there is also the opportunity to recycle rather than throw away/discard good usable items. Join or start a Freecycle group (http://www.freecycle.org/) in your area. This would keep clothing, furniture, appliances, tools, books, building materials, etc., out of the landfills.

Consider growing your own vegetables, using composted material you have produced from food scraps yourself.

Do not purchase bottled water. Use a water filtering system/product and fill your own bottle (you can buy them). We dump hundreds of thousands of bottles in landfills every day.

Empty out your cars trunk of evrything that is not essential. Extra weight cuts mpg. efficiency.

Plastic jugs from laundry soaps can be recycled by cutting off the tops and turning them into planting containers. The smaller spout tops (bleach, dish detergent, etc. bottles) can be made into funnels.

Coffee cans, glass jars can be used for storage of a multitude of things - food stuffs, nuts/bolts/nails, etc., buttons and sewing supplies. They also can be used for packaging of cookie, soup mixes, jellies, jams, etc., to be given as gifts.

Repair damaged items including clothing, rather than tossing them.

Reuse ANYTHING and EVERYTHING possible.

Think about it, there are so many ways we can eliminate waste, to cut back on the use of products that we are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to dump into landfills where they pollute the earth and underground water.

Does anyone have tips on how to keep a kiddie pool clean?

We Answered:

Dirt and debris makes me think you may have neighborhood raccoons washing their dinner, especially if it's fairly clean at supper time and fairly dirty the next morning. Covering may help, but they're pretty clever creatures and can probably defeat most easy measures. Not encouraging them to hang around is a good idea. There are some fairly nasty parasites that are possible... Baylisascaris being the main concern.

I'd probably play it safe and dump the pool in the evening. Recycle the water onto the flower and vegetable gardens, and the lawn.

What can I do to conserve water... any tips?

We Answered:

When one needs hot water for a shower or in a sink, don't just let the cold water run down the drain. Save it with a bucket or pan and use it to water plants or flush the toilet.

Landscaping uses lots of water. Use lots of thick mulch to retard evaporation, install a drip system, plant low water use plants. Water in the early morning or late afternoon.

Don't clean things with a hose, uses a nozzle with a shut off when washing the car. (Or don't wash the car at all, just keep the windows clean with windex.)

Get a shower shut-off valve that installs behind the shower head. (easy DIY item.) Then while showering you can shut the shower off temporarily while washing hair/lathering up without losing that all important temperature setting. Combined with a low flow shower head this can save a lot of water.

Find your water meter. Carefully record the setting, then don't use your water for a least half an hour. Check the water meter again, if the meter reading has changed, you have water leak somewhere. These can be extremely substantial, I had a client who was losing an Olympic size pool of water every three days through a broken pipe.

Let the lawn die, it's for a good cause.

Shower with a friend. ;)

Carole Said:

If I have a low flush toilet, will sinking a bottle of water in the tank still help? Or interfere w/flushing?

We Answered:

certainly you can try it.
i suspect that they don't flush a lot more water than they need to.
what you don't want to do is decrease the amount of water high up in the tank.
that's where most of the "rush of water" is generated.
the rest is just to clean up after the first part of the flush gets the operation started.

What are some tips to help conserve water?

We Answered:

- Turn on the shower only when rinsing, do not leave the shower the entire time you're in the bathroom.

- Use a bucket of water when cleaning your car instead of a hose.

- lower the level of the buoy inside your toilet so it uses less water.

- fix all dripping faucets.

- bath only few times a week. Depending if you really get dirty (e.g. working in a construction yard) a day.

- Otherwise, just let nature run through it's course. technically, the volume of water ll over the planet never disappears or increases.
