Regarding the "sterilize" solution. This has been tried in isolated pockets. As has been limiting the population growth to only one child per family (in China) In China the policy of replacing two people with one is expected to be so effective that the population will grow in the next 30 years from 1.3 billion to 1.6 billion. Either way people tend to cheat. Make a law and people will automatically look for loopholes or "assume" that it does not apply to them.

Regarding the "kill" solution this has also been done with "wars," pestilence, and famine. This solution will come to us one way or the other. But again attempting to level the playing field and make this apply to all equally seems to be beyond our capacity. Generals send the footsoldiers to war. Pestilence is to some extent avoided by those with a cure, better health, better healthcare, or a better environment. Famine does not strike everyone equally in every place. Those who lead a marginal existance tend to get hit the hardest in any event. The well fed may survive longer than the undernurished or malnurished.

But perhaps the "standard of living of the USA" is not the most important thing. This is like saying it is more important to live with children, with money, with health, and with food ... than it is to live at all. Maybe this is too narrow a view of life. Perhaps the chance to live at all also has value and we should explore other definitions of life.

The USA lifestyle may not be what we should be striving for in any event. Americans have lately placed a lot of importance on a strong military (War) and have not shied away from developing biological weapons (pestilence.) While it is true that they have in the past provided food relief for the world their massive food subsidities to their own farmers mean that farmers around the world cannot compete (famine.)

The US has a great deal of faith in "the market" which does not allow for long term security in the prices of goods and services. This depresses investment in much needed technologies. Even the very wealth of the US attracts attention away from other possible solutions and ways of living.

I say this as someone born and raised in the US, but having traveled enough in the world to see other solutions. Our worst enemy is believing that we have already found the solution and it is impossible to reach.

quit framing houses with wood. One man was telling me that you can cut down an acre of trees or 12 junk cars.
the metal framing is cheeper and better and no worrys about rotting wood or termites. Holds up better in violent weather.
put together by welding rather than nails so it is secure.
Even metal roofs are life time roofs and we can recycle metal.
We need to melt down a few cars.
also they have a new product out that makes roofing shingles out of old tires. Melted down and puts out a very strong shingle, coated in rubber looks like a regular shake shingle.
course I am for solar pannel roofs.

2. If you cut a tree, replace it with a tree or more to keep that specie alive.
3. Don't use cyanide or dynamite when fishing. Corals get damaged.
4. Reuse, reduce, recycle!
