Ways To Conserve Water At Home

Jeffery Said:

What are you doing to conserve energy and save money?

We Answered:

I've made a lot of changes over the last few years and most have saved me money. I have cut back on my standby energy usage, I use power strips with switches on them for my tv, dvd and game system, it is easier than unplugging everything. I do the same for my computer, speakers, monitor and printer. Things that charge like electric tooth brushes or cordless phones get charged every few days.

A programmable thermostat can help and they are pretty easy to install and cost around $50. I have a gable or attic fan (not a whole house fan) that vents the hot air out of the attic and uses just a little energy but keeps the house cooler so I use the a/c less. They also are easy to install and cost around $50, but you will need to make sure you have an electricity source, you can get solar powered ones, but they cost a couple hundred dollars.

Food is another area I have found eating earth friendly will save money. Processed foods seem cheap, but you can almost always make it cheaper from scratch. I have a garden this year, but have shopped at farmers markets for a couple years, they are cheaper and the food is much tastier and since they were allowed to mature they have more nutrition. I also eat less meat, we are really enjoying adding dried beans and whole grains to our diet. I also buy larger cuts and portion it out myself for the freezer, I only buy whole chickens and can get about 4 meals for a family of 3 out of each.

If you are trying to conserve water then aerators or flow restrictors on faucets can help as well as a good low flow shower head. We are also in a drought and have removed portions of our lawn and installed low water landscaping. We also cut a few minutes off of our showers, I was my hair 2-3 times a week at the most, which cuts water usage.

Many utilities have audit services, mine has an online audit which will tell you where your energy usage is and how tips to conserve. Mine also provides a home visit for free.

Insulation and weather stripping can help reduce energy costs as well. If cooling your home is a priority then shade on the south side in any form will help as well as using drapes instead of blinds. I also have solar shades on my windows, we installed them in phases to spread the expense over a few years.

HELP!!! STREP THROAT, AND I'M SUPPOSED TO SING!?

We Answered:

Alex has the right idea . I would also add that it would not hurt to gargle with crushed paracetamol every four hours then gargle with an acidic drink such as lemon or pineapple before you sing to move the mucus away from your vocal chords. Hot black tea (not boiling hot will also help especially with a bit of lemon juice). I have used all of these and they do work. If you were older I would suggest gargling with warm brandy.

What do Europeans do to conserve water?

We Answered:

In some (very few,) houses the rain water is used to clear the toilet and/or saved to water the plants in the garden.
Most toilets have a water saving button, a small reservoir and are designed not to have a lot of water in them. (First time I used a toilet in the USA I thought it was blocked, with so much water standing in it.)

Our washing machines and dish washers are build to conserve water. And we are asked just to use them with a full load.
We are asked to close the tap while brushing our teeth.
Use just enough water for cleaning the car, not waste it.
To take showers rather than tub baths.
Water saving taps are rather common, as are the buttons in public buildings which will only give water when pushed in.

But overall, in western Europe most people use more water per day than most people in Northern Africa in a month. (Or even a year.)
