The primaries and caucuses run through June. By that time we should know the 2 candidates.

However, it will become official during the nominating process at the conventions.
Democratic National Convention Aug 25-28
Republican National Convention Sept 1-4

Those 2 candidates, plus all the candidates from the minor parties will be listed on the ballot in the general election on November 4.

I think it has to do with affirmative action. The funny thing is that without poor people, the Democratic party would dry up and blow away. So the Democratic party wants to keep people poor by promoting welfare and illegal immigration. The more poor people the better for the Dems.

Of course it is possible. Two people don't have to agree on everything to have a successful relationship. Use your differences as an opportunity to foster interesting discussions, and open your minds to each other's views. You might learn something.

If you two can discuss politics and your views calmly and thoughtfully, you might end up having a more intellectually stimulating relationship.

I don't really see this issue as a relationship deal-breaker! Good luck.

Not 'Democrat', Democratic.

The South was Democratic since the Civil War. Southerners couldn't bring themselves to vote for the Party of Lincoln. But the Southern Democratic Party was different from the mainstream Democratic Party. In fact in 1948 they tried to come out as their own party, the Dixiecrats, but they were unsuccessful.

But after the Civil Rights era of the 60s, George Wallace ran for president in 1968 and '72 as a third party candidate. He captured a Southern 'backlash' to the Civil Rights laws, forced integration, protections of voting rights for blacks, etc. He lost, but he did better than most third party candidates.

After Wallace's run, the Republican Party mounted a 'Southern Strategy' under President Nixon to capture the South. And they were successful. All the powerful leaders of the Dixiecrats (Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, etc.) switched to the Republican Party. It gave the Republicans an advantage, even though they were still (and have always been, and are still now) the minority party in terms of voter registrations nationwide.
