Republicans believe that it is not enough for the family to promote positive morals and values; they believe that the government must also have an active and prominent role. In a broader sense, Republicans prefer to foster positive morals and values in American society through the government and legislation. Typically, this philosophy is considered "socially conservative" even though it advocates the liberal application of government on the individual.

EDIT: okay coming back to this yeah i see what you're saying. honestly i kind of skimmed through it and thought it was just more republican bashing so i got defensive but yeah... they are completely backwards namesake wise. i don't feel like researching it right now but i seem to remember democrats used to be right wing and republicans used to be left wing. i believe it changed sometime around the lincoln era. again though, my bad i was jumping to conclusions. good question though, surprised i've never heard it brought up before.
