Democratic Form Of Government

Julie Said:

What is the difference between an authoritarian form of government and a democratic form of government?

We Answered:

Authoritian doesn't mean dictatorship, altough a prevalent form of it is a dictatorship. I'll look into my political science notes and tell you later all the elements of both.

Edit: My notes + what is on the internet
Authoritarian states are states in which either one person or a group of people rule through a mandate, not through free elections. Also, whatever they say goes. Examples of authoritarian states are oligarchies (rule by a group of elites), dictatorships (rule by one person as the leader), absolute monarchies (where the ruler inherits his/her power by bloodline and rules w/o any limitation; not to be confused with constitutional monarchies), juntas (rule by the military), and theocracies (rule by the state religion's leaders). There are 51 authoritarian states today. North Korea is the most authoritarian state.

In a democracy, they have elections with the following elements: free from coercion, fairly applying the rules, and open to all its citizen. Also, they have basic human rights involved as part of the rights of people. From there, there is many flavors of democracy (e.g., parliamentary/presidential, divisions of state rights/no division at all, set elections/can call election at anytime, etc.) There are 30 full democracies and 50 flawed democracies in the world today. Sweden is the most democratic nation.

Hybrid regime is where they don't have enough elements to be considered a democracy, but they are clearly not authoritarian either. There are 36 hybrid regimes, with Albania being the closest to a democracy and with Iraq being the closest to an authoritian state.

(All examples by country taken from a 2008 ranking of Democracy Index; situations might have changed since but this is the most current ranking).

Ralph Said:

What divides democratic form of government and an Oligarchy?

We Answered:

Honestly, looking at the USA and UK I would say nothing.

It's perfectly possible to have a democracy and an oligarchy at the same time. The USA and UK have free votes for citizens but only from a selected choice of effectively identical policy and acceptable parties. The only difference, if at all, is who greases their wheel, not whether their wheel is greased...

The idea that vested interests don't get favourable business contracts from the US and UK governments is laughable. For example, the millions of US tax dollars that were literally handed out in crates to private US contractors by weight of cash! for no return in Iraq or the UK Government stepping in to halt Scotland Yard criminal enquiries into Saudi arms deals. High profile examples and so common as to be ignored...

Ken Said:

How did the English Revolutions result in a democratic form of government?

We Answered:

the period of the English Civil Wars and Commonwealth period 1640-1660, in which Parliament challenged King Charles I's authority, engaged in civil conflict against his forces, and executed him in 1649. This was followed by a ten-year experiment in republicanism, the "Commonwealth".

Veronica Said:

How we can form a democratic government represented by 100% citizens?

We Answered:

It's only possible in direct democracy like that in ancient Greek city states and that too represents only majority opinion.
Today when everywhere there is representative democracy,it's not possible to represent views of 100%

That's why Aristotle blamed democracy as most perverted form of government.
