Democratic Labour Party

Nathaniel Said:

what led to the formation of the Democratic labour Party?

We Answered:

The DLP was formed through the merger of three Opposition parties in the Legislative Council, the People's Democratic Party, the Trinidad Labour Party and the Party of Political Progress Groups. Also joining was Stephen Maharaj a member of the Butler Party. The three parties aligned with the Democratic Labour Party of the West Indies Federation under the leadership of Sir Alexander Bustamante and merged to form a single national party. The DLP defeated the PNM in the 1958 Federal Elections, winning six of the ten seats in the Federal Parliament.

Shortly thereafter the party began to disintegrate. Bhadase Sagan Maraj, the first leader of the party in the Legislative Council, became ill, bedridden and addicted to pethidine. Dr. Rudranath Capildeo was elected party leader in 1960; he was brought in to the party to provide an "intellectual equal" to Eric Williams. When Capildeo left Trinidad to teach at the University of London, a faction of the party called a general meeting and elected Albert Gomes party leader. However, the rank and file of the party stood behind Capildeo, and the Gomes faction left the party.

Martin Said:

How did the Blue Collar Democratic Labor Party thansition to the laise fair leasure class unemployed Lib Party?

We Answered:

I agree, but with both parties. Both parties have transitioned throughout time. Specifically answering your question about the Democratic Party though, honestly I think it is due to the Democratic Party in desire to gaining more votes reached further and further out to the "lower demographic" of the country, therefore creating several government programs to try to please them in return for their votes in the polls and thus throughout the years it's snowballed and that's what now drives the party. Therefore, the demographics of the party has undergone a major change over the decades, and due to the various government programs, they feel no need to strive as hard. They're loyal to the party so long as the government is loyal to them.

Harold Said:

Is the Labour party anti-democratic by supporting "Civil disobedience"?

We Answered:

Hi Paine
No right thinking person will be going on strike in these uncertain days.
They know that the Union officials will be on full pay and will keep their jobs while the carnage unfolds.
People who do strike will be in danger of losing their jobs and replaced by lower paid workers.
Arthur Scargill is still on a £100,000 a year salary despite his actions destroying whole communities.
I think most people are more worldly wise these days. At least, I hope they are.
Best wishes.

Janice Said:

Is the Labour Party the British equivalent of the Democratic Party?

We Answered:

very very broadly speaking

US Republican = UK Conservative Party (Pro-Capitalist, serves the interests of big business and those who are already rich.)

US Democrat = UK Labour Party (more Socialist, serves the interests of the Working Class).

However, the Labour party is much more left wing than the Democrats. If you compared the policies you'd find that the Democrats and the UK Conservatives were more similar and there wasn't an exact match to the Labour party in America as that would just be considered way too left wing and "un-American", lol.

Thankfully we don't have anything like the Republicans in the UK.

Basically the UK is a lot more Socialist than America, so even our "Conservatives" would seem left wing to the average "Yank" . . .

Heidi Said:

What's the difference and similarities of the US democratic party and the UK labour party?

We Answered:

Don't know since you also have the Liberal Democrats in the UK and they are, as I understand it, somewhere between the Conservatives and the Labour Party. Do the Conservatives in the UK support the National Health Service?

Heidi Said:

SDLP dirty tricks, socialist democratic labour party?

We Answered:

Yes you can, if you don't think something is right you should say something.

Eduardo Said:

Republican or Democratic Party usa which one is simular to Australia Labour Party?

We Answered:

The Australian LabOr party is similar to the Democrats in USA, except that it does include some who are more left-wing than I've ever heard of in the major parties of the USA. Currently the right-wing has the numbers and thus the power.
