social democratic=/=socialist. Social democracy as an ideology emerged from socialism around WWI. Social democrats dropped all the revolutionary aspects of socialism and instead focused on simply reforming capitalism. Actually you have social democrats to thank for the protection of capitalism in Europe. During the socialist revolution in germany after WWI, prominent social democrats actually authorized the murder of some major German socialists.

The Social Democrats USA and the Democratic Socialists of America both represent the social democratic side of the Socialist Party of America split, the real socialists formed the Socialist Party-USA. The former two party's have no actual socialist demands and continue the social democratic trend trying to do nothing more than put a 'face' on capitalism.

I don't particularly like either party, even though I mostly vote Democratic. I think both parties have gotten too cozy with lobbyists and major money contributors. They don't care what their own party members want anymore. I haven't seen a candidate for ANY political office yet that I'd be 100% happy voting for. They all care more about lining their pockets than doing what's best for this country.
