Cindy Said:
Why did the southern states become predominantly Republican while the northern states become democratic? We Answered:
Because northern states, and particularly the large urban centers became increasingly more liberal (central authority) while southern states remained more conservative (diverse authority)."The mobs of the great cities add just so much to the support of pure government, as sores do to the strength of the human body."
Thomas Jefferson
Southerners once left the Union because their majority view was the central authority had usurped authority not given it by the Constitution.
"All that the South has ever desired was that the Union as established by our forefathers should be preserved and that the government as originally organized should be administered in purity and truth."
"We could have pursued no other course without dishonour. And as sad as the results have been, if it had all to be done over again, we should be compelled to act in precisely the same manner."
Gen. Robert E. Lee
So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained.
General Robert E. Lee, May 1, 1870
The Democratic Party should take note that the "Party" that essentially dragged the South back into the Union, and then instituted punitive policies that established the South as an internal impoverished colony, gives more votes to that party's Presidential candidate than democrats. Voting for a Republican for a lot of Southerners remains totally distasteful.
It's just that they find voting for a national socialist even more distasteful.
Southern Democrats have always differed from "Northern" democrats. In 1860 the Democratic Party split along mostly geographic lines. That election was split four ways. The Republican, Democratic, Southern Democratic and Constitutional Union parties campaigned for the office of President.
The "northern" vote was split between the Republicans and Democrats. The Southern vote was split between the Southern Democratic and the Constitutional Union parties.
Pay close attention to the percentage of vote garnered by the CU party in the South, between 30 and 40%. The political beliefs of the CU party became the core of Republican southern support some 150 years later.

For example, in that election in North Carolina, there were three presidential candidates. Breckenridge (Southern Democrat), Bell (Constitutional Union) and Douglas (Democrat). There were 96,712 votes cast for the office with Breckenridge getting 48,846 (50.51%), Bell getting 45,129 (46.66%) and Douglas getting 2,737 (2.83%). Lincoln was not on the ballot and any Carolinian that may have voted for him, couldn't.
Bell won three states, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. He nearly carried Maryland, losing by 722 votes out of 92,502 cast.
The Constitutional Union Party name came from its extremely simple platform, a simple resolution "to recognize no political principle other than the Constitution...the Union...and the Enforcement of the Laws."
The same core belief that today drives many Southern democrats to abandon the National Party when it comes to Presidential politics while they persistently, as often as not, elect democrats to local or state office.
Look at the results of the latest general election in the state of North Carolina.
Bush got 1,961,166 votes. Easley (Democrat for Governor) got 1,939,154 and won. Kerry got 1,525,849. That's a lot of democrats.
Where did those 413,305 democrat votes go?
The Southern Democrat is still here, but the national Democratic Party left a long time ago.
If you want to know why some Southern democrats won’t vote for a democrat for President, all one has to do is look at the list of candidates the democrats have fielded since 1968. All the losers were way to liberal and the two winners were considered moderate Southerners who proved to be more liberal than believed.
They all make Hubert Humphrey look like a right-winger.

Andrew Said:
Where can I find a map showing which states are democratic? We Answered:
The following map shows the states that tend to vote Democrat in most of the elections. The darker blue a state is the more likely they were to vote for a Democrat in the last 5 elections not counting yesterday 11-2-2010. and of course the more red a state the more likely they would vote republican.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Purple…
Steven Said:
Why do the wealthiest states vote Democratic? We Answered:
Because those states are typically more educated.College educated people are more likely to vote democrat.
** to the guy above me, Vermont is 98% white and very small. Look how they voted: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results…
Colleen Said:
Why did south became conservative red states while north turned blue this century? We Answered:
Believe it or not, Its not the people in the states that changed their views, but the political parties themselves that changed views. In the past it was the Democrats that were conservative, but now they tend to be liberal. Same went for Republicans. Back then Republicans were liberal. That's why many people relate the Republican Abe Lincoln to the Democratic Barack Obama. They may be of different parties but their views were the same.Clayton Said:
Facts show that Democratic States pay more in taxes and get less for the money than Republican states? We Answered:
I for one am sick and tired of supporting the lazy Republicans especially those down South. You know the ones that are always complaing "I want my governemt back" and the ones who say "those Democrats are lazy". I have known for quite a while these facts show us a different story!
