Republicans are totally flexible on the topic of "values".To them,agreeing or disagreeing with segregation,or the sepereation of church and state,for example,depends on where the money is.

Economics

Democrats believe in economics from the bottom up. The idea is the economy will improve if the people at the bottom do better. This leads to the welfare system, minimum wage, and universal health care.

Republicans believe in economics from the top down. The idea is the people at the top are the ones that create jobs so if they are doing better there will be more jobs and everyone will do better.

Social Issues

Republicans tend to be socially conservative. This leads to the idea of anti-abortion, family values, and against gays marriage. Fundamentally religious people often are Republican.

Democrats tend to be socially liberal. They support ideas like abortion as a choice, gay marriage, sex education and contraceptive distribution in schools. Atheists and people that believe strongly in all religious content should be outside of all public venues tend to be Democratic.

The 2 parties haven't switched...they've both moved left...drastically..


Back in the early 20th century..the left consisted of communists, socialists and the fascists...

The center to center left was the dems..

The right was occupied by the republicans..

As the commies, reds, and pinkos (as political parties and organized philosophies) gradually left the political scene from the late 50's through the mid 70's...it left a huge vacuum on the left...there were plenty of people who still believed in that nonsense (still are), but there were no party affiliations of any strength or sructure for those individuals to register with. That voting bloc had no home...so they found the only home available to them..the dems...who were not all that far left...but were still the only organized leftists left.

That leftist bloc has moved your grandfathers democrats to the left...leaving a huge vacuum in the middle, where the republicans have now filled.

Where 50 to 80 years ago, the political wackos were on the left....many now on are on the right...Ron Paul is a great example...that guy has a following..and he is as nuts on the right as the commies were on the left.

The far right is now the home of the religious right...while the country was more religious in the 40's and 50's..the Christian right they fit nicely in the republican party...they were there of course, but they were an otherwise ignored constituency.

Ever wonder why the country as a whole was more religious in the 40's and 50's, yet the religious are far louder today?

Their party left them, to a degree. They now 'stick out'...they are obvious and vocal.

The party has moved left...leaving many in the Christian right feeling homeless with Rudy Guiliani...The Governator..as the party leaders.

Both parties have moved left...many old democrats while standing still, found they were now republicans. Many old republicans, while standing still, now find they are part of the religious right.

We've all moved left...unfortunately..
