Most but not all democrats believe that the duty of government is to protect and provide for the people, for example healthcare, schools. Most but not all Republicans believe government's role is to provide the tools for you to provide for yourself. IE good roads, a country made safe by strong military.

There are a lot of exceptions to the rule, but you'll find that's the gist.

There is very little difference in reality. If they stuck to their principles that I will list below... they are polar opposites.

Republicans- believe in individual freedom,the constitution,low taxes,small government and your right to bear arms.They also believe welfare should be a hand up and not a hand out.

Democrats-believe in individual freedom as long as it doesn't upset anyone or interfere with the government.They love high taxes and big controlling government. They are also heavily anti-gun and many would love America to become more European or communist.

I have hard time finding the real difference most of the time. They both try to answer what is politically correct and help them get elected. Many times they don't answer the question and beat around the bush. We should look at all candidates as individuals and vote based upon their record and promises kept.
