Well if you’re speaking of the leadership then the differences are rather obscure. Democrats are Socialists and Republicans tend to govern like Socialsits-lite, inspite of the campaign rhetoric. However philosophically there are marked differences in the two.

Democrats, being Socialists, favour and expansive government backed by a judiciary that in active and involved in the everyday lives of the citizenry. There is a general animus towards individuality and basic human nature. In fact, the Leftist believes that human nature is malleable and as such it merely requires the right guidance from above to shape man into the form most desired. Central planning is key to the leftists particularly in economics. Not all Socialsits oppose Capitalism but no Socialists supports the concept of “free enterprise.”

Republicans, being Classical Liberals, favour limited government backed by the Rule of Law. To the right, it is government that should be policed, not he citizen. At least not to the degree that the government does today. The Rights accepts human nature as he finds it, warts and all and believes in structuring public policy so as to make the best use of man’s basic nature for the good of everyone. There is a healthy skepticism over the ability of the government to actually do good. Therefore the Right prefers to empower the State to prevent injustice rather than to create the just society. Man should not be treated like so much potter’s clay. The Rights fiercely advocates free enterprise which means strict limits on regulation, taxes and other restrictive encumbrances on human activity with strict enforcement of laws prohibiting force, fraud and deceit.

Dem's want a large centralized government which would control many aspects of your life, and would cost you in taxes for that. Things like health-care, welfare, etc. Progressives would take that a step further and put in taxes on food or ban things that they don't want you to do, like smoke, drink, or eat fast food. They brought us prohibition years ago as well as the income tax system.

Republicans talk about smaller government, and less spending. Lately they haven't done a very good job at that. So in come the Conservatives who are for a small government, low taxes, and for the government to just stay out of your way. However, they won't offer you many services either.
