Features Of Democratic Government

Diane Said:

What is the answer of the following question?

We Answered:

James Madison defined republic in terms of representative democracy as opposed to direct democracy, and this usage is still employed by many viewing themselves as "republicans"

Democracy includes, equality and freedom. These principles are reflected by all citizens being equal before the law, and having equal access to power, and freedom is secured by legitimized rights and liberties, which are generally protected by a constitution.

James Madison believed that the wealthy know what is good for the government because the masses don't know any better. Many Republicans still hold this view.

Miriam Said:

What has happened to our media which is so necessary to democracy?

We Answered:

All too true. I'm surprised you didn't mention how many of the networks are owned and operated by the big oil corporations and weapons manufacturers, which would probably explain their hawkish stance and complete lack of journalistic standards. I used to laugh at the term "liberal media", not anymore. The myth is too destructive and pernicious to be funny. Have you ever noticed how you can surf from one "news" program to another and hear the same "top" stories covered from the same perspective, in the same way, using the same words, from almost identical copy? They're interchangable. Free speech? Freedom of the press? Nope. Oops. I just realized I didn't technically answer your question. I wouldn't want another YA violation. The answer is: They have been sucked up by the right wing propaganda machine and have become the conservative media.

Features Of Democrazy? Help please? :)?

We Answered:

Freedom House is probably your best bet:

http://www.freedomhouse.org/

They give a list of all the world's national governments plus a rating of their level of "freedom" based on many categories, which you can use as your features of democract:

- elections (more democratic if you can vote for anyone at any level, less if candidates are restricted by gov't or voting is limited to low levels of governance)
- free speech and independence of the media
- freedom, fairness, and independence of the courts
- civil control of the military

and so forth

i need help asap i pick best answer can some on help me compare the German Government to our "USA" Government?

We Answered:

There are 3 main differences between the German and American systems of executive and legislative...

1. The American executive (President) is one person combining the roles of Head of Government and Head of State. The German Government divides those two offices between the president (Head of State) and the Chancellor (Head of Government).

2. There is a strict separation of power in the American government. The President is directly chosen by the people through the Electoral College, while in the German system the Chancellor is chosen by the Bundestag.

3. In the American system, both houses of Congress are equal and are chosen by direct election of the people. In the German system, the lower house (Bundestag) is chosen by the people, and also has the real power. The upper house (Bundesrat) is made up of appointees of the various states executive cabinets. Moreover, these people do not serve fixed terms as members of Congress do. Members of the Bundesrat can be removed by the state cabinets at any time. In addition, the Bundesrat is subordinate in power to the Bundestag. The two branches are not co-equal.

Hope this helps.
