This is my take on the subject. It comes down to how they see people. I will use liberals vs conservatives instead of republican and democrats.

Conservatives think people are capable of doing things for themselves. They have a belief that if the playing field is level that everyone can prosper and take care of themselves and their family.

Liberals think that some people are not capable of doing things for themselves and need the government to do things for them. They try to legislate the playing field to make it more friendly to some over others.

The reason I come to this conclusion is because most conservatives, myself included, are for smaller government and personal responsibility. While liberals are for larger government involvement in peoples lives and don't think people can take responsibility for themselves. Liberals want to write laws like affirmative action to give people of a certain color help, because they think that they can not make it on the content of their character. They want to give welfare to some because they think they should not take responsibility for the actions they have taken. Liberals are for abortion because they do not think that women should have to take responsibility for their actions.

So basically it comes down to conservatives having a belief that no matter what your skin color, gender, economic condition that you live in the land of opportunity and if you apply yourself you can overcome your conditions and thrive in this country. Liberals do not have that belief in people and think they need the government to take care of them in order for them to make it in this country.

Republicans believe in less government intervention... some of the time. For example they are proponents of less regulation, such as looser restrictions on corporations and lending requirements for banks (the recent housing crisis is a result of looser regulation). On the other hand they tend to be in favor of MORE government when it comes to peoples' personal lives, such as no abortion, teaching abstinence, and being against gay marriage.

Republicans also tend to side with large corporations, such as lower taxes or tax breaks for such companies. They do not like things such as estate taxes (taxation on the monies left behind by wealthy individuals when they die).

Democrats are in favor of more government involvement in society, such as government-funded programs like Welfare and public schooling as well as tighter restrictions on issues such as gun control. They also tend to vote in favor of low and middle-income individuals, making tax decisions that often don't please the 2-3% of people who make vast amounts more money than what the average citizen makes.

republicans are always against things that are for the common good of America, and they concentrate on ways of making money.

they support big business and are always giving the rich tax cuts while sticking it to the working class and the underpriveleged.

Corrupt corporations always flourish under republicans because they go un-checked for so long.

It's called: "Unrestrained excess."

Democrats, on the other hand, are for helping the common Joe and Jane, of America.

They are the ones who passed the 40 hour work week laws, and overtime hours for overtime work.

The Democrats are for preserving nature for our future generations, while republicans are for depleating Earth of all it's valuable resources now, and leaving an empty shell here for the future generations.

If you believe in "Peace", "Brotherhood", and "Love", then you are a Democrat but if you believe in "The Almighty Dollar Bill", "Eternal Wars", and "george w. bush" then you are a republican.

Democrats want the public to cough up trillions of dollars and total control over their health care so that 30 to 40 million get low cost insurance

Republicans want to lower the cost of health care by using the market competitive forces
Republicans want to stop malicious and frivolous lawsuits

They want to tweak health care not slam it with a regulation mallet
