Republicans believe in limitations to government, particularly at the federal level. They are against expanding the federal government, feeling that this level is the least responsive to the people. Strict concervatives in the party believe that the Constitution is what it is, particularly the 10th Amendment. If it isn't in there, it belongs to the states and local government, which is closer to the people and thus more responsive to them.

Fiscal conservatives extend this belief to the monetary policy. They believe that government has an oversight role in business to make sure that people are playing fair, but other than that they should stay out of business. A fiscal conservative would argue that the current economic crisis was a result of government interference in the housing market, causing a bubble in values in pursuit of affordable housing for all. They also believe that the best way to spur on the economy is to remove restrictions on business and success (taxes being key here).

Republicans are NOT for the rich. They are for getting government out of everyone's way so all can succeed. They choose not to engage in the class warfare that liberals love so much. Conservatives realize that punishing anyone with unfair taxes only discourages investment and growth.

There is alot of talk about Democrats wanting to help the little guy and raise taxes on businesses. When the cost of doing business increases (such as by raising taxes), who do you think pays for that? The little guy in the form of higher prices for goods and services. Because those costs WILL get passed on to us.

As far as who the party of big business is, remember that most of Wall Street is Democrat.

dems believe women should have the freedom of choice to choose unlike far right repubs. also we are both against illegal immigration, just go about it in different ways. also, conservitives want to go back to the way things where not change thing. they are stuck in the past and want the FDR days back

I think you are absolutely correct. I've had this discussion many times. Supporters of Democratic campaigns and causes are the most educated and wealthy in the U.S. A Republican brought this to my attention in his attempt to persuade me that Democrats were really "the party of the rich" and were nothing but intellectual elitists. All it did was reaffirm my opinion that these people are willing to pay more taxes for the betterment of society. And the fact that democratic voters have the highest percentage of graduate degrees and PHDs, shows me the brightest minds in our country support the party they see as bringing America forward. These highly educated multimillionares/billionares are pushing a party that will hurt their pocket books. That shows me they care more about the country than their change purses. Republicans often talk about welfare, while completely ignoring the corporate welfare that costs this country over $150 billion every year.

I also think something must be said of Republican attempts to legislate morality. Republicans see themselves as small government, yet the current party is a perversion of it's former self. They have created huge government programs, they have run up the debt to unbelieveable numbers, they have also taken the duty of morality police. They want the government involved in people's reproductive matters and people's sex life. Whether someone chooses to abort a fetus or marry their long time partner, are not things the government should be meddling in. Their religiosity only goes so far. When the elected head of the Christian Coalition wanted to make combatting poverty and protecting our environment key parts of their plan, he was rebuffed and forced to leave. If that doesn't say something, I'm not sure what does.
