What Is Democratic Government
Dean Said:
What is america a democratic government or a republic government???We Answered:
We are a republic.Democracy:
a: government by the people; especially : rule of the majority.
b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.
Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences
Republic
a: a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government.
b: a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law.
Ashley Said:
What are the three most important documents in the development of American Democratic government? We Answered:
Declaration of Independence - of course adapted in 1776 to declare independence from the US' colonizers, the Kingdom of Great Britain. This declared that all people have certain "unalienable rights" including the right to overcome their oppressors. This was the first step that America took in creating a democratic government.Articles of Confederation - this was the first set of laws that the founding fathers created after declaring independence. It was adapted in 1781 and was not really effective. This document created a confederation, which meant that all of the states in the US acted more like a separate country in itself. However, it created a framework of a our current government.
Constitution/Bill of Rights - the Constitution was ratified in 1787, after the war was over, and it replaced the Articles of Confederation. This document is still the actual supreme law of the land used today and it created our current legislative (House of Representatives and Senate), executive (President and cabinet), and judiciary (Supreme and lower courts) branches, as well as the separation of powers that allows them to work together. The constitution created a federation which meant that the states would work together more on national matters. The Bill of Rights was the first ten amendments (or additions) to the constitution. These provided specific rights to US citizens protected under federal law.
Bernice Said:
Which countries have a democratic government? and Which countries have a Communist government? We Answered:
Why do you say that there are democratic governments and communist governments as if they are opposites? There are Capitalist democracies and Socialist democracies as there are Capitalist totalitarian regimes and Socialist totalitarian regimes.
You should learn your terms --- Capitalist, Socialist and Communist are ECONOMIC terms.
Democracy is an ideal form of government and it varies in definition from country to country.
Singapore and Malaysia are capitalist economies with political parties and many people would say they are democracies. BUT they are One-Party counties that arrest dissidents and can hold them indefinitely without charges or trials. One person has been held in prison in Singapore since 1966 without charge or trial.
Many people consider the US-backed South Korean government as a democracy, but it was a totalitarian state and still has a large number of totalitarian laws. Japan was until recently ruled by a one-party government.
Indonesia has a number of political parties and is a Capitalist country but one can never call it a Truly democratic country because of the totalitarian rule, especially under President Suharto.
Australia is currently governed by a political party that calls itself "Socialist". But the Australian Labor Party is very pro-capitalist in its outlook. Australia is a far more democratic country than the US.
There has been only one country that was a Communist country -- Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) during the totalitarian regime of the Khmer Rouge (15 April 1975 to Jan 4, 1979).
There have been and still are a number of Socialist countries ruled by Communist Parties (political parties who hope one day to have an economic system operating in their country that is communist). Some are democratic while others are more totalitarian.
Edwin Said:
What according to madison are the features that make a republican government superior to a democratic? We Answered:
As a political theorist, Madison's most distinctive belief was that the new republic needed checks and balances to protect individual rights from the tyranny of the majority.*Jacob Said:
How should a Democratic government change America? We Answered:
I'd like to see them focus more on the needs of average Americans than catering to the rich. Doing something about the health care mess would be a good start. Helping out the schools. Getting some money to the states to fund infrastrcture repairs, everything from roads to bridges to hospitals. Investing in research that will prompt better lives and more jobs, like nanotechnology and biotechnology. Getting serious about fighting global warming and preparing for its impacts. Working to protect the environment in general, and especially the oceans. We hear so much that the government can't afford to do anything to help, but they found a TRILLION dollars for that stupid war.Marion Said:
Does anyone even have a clue as to what socialist, communist, democratic government is?We Answered:
The majority of posters in political categories have no idea what socialism or communism are. They use them as undefined BAD WORDS, synonymous with "un-American". ?°)
