The nickname of the Republican Party didn't get attached to it until 1888. Previously, the nickname had been used by Southern Democrats. After the Republicans won back the Presidency and Congress for the first time since the Grant administration, the Chicago Tribune proclaimed: "Let us be thankful that under the rule of the Grand Old Party ... these United States will resume the onward and upward march which the election of Grover Cleveland in 1884 partially arrested."

We did, a few months back. Obviously, the Democratic party of the past was terrible. We threw out those racist members and they became dixiecrats, who later were welcomed into the GOP. Thus, segregationist Strom Thurmond was elected until death as a Republican after stating repeatedly that segregation should be now, and forever more. And Trent Lott defended Thurmond repeatedly, claiming that if YOUR party had listened to Strom Thurmond back then, the 'world would be a better place'. Thankfully, Democrats see the errors of their ways and have embraced progressive reforms and equality, while YOUR party has welcomed in everything that we USED to stand for.

Thomas Jefferson questioned the existence of a God. He was frequently accused of being an atheist. He was a leader in the campaign to separate church and state.
I don't think he would be a member of today's Republican party.
