California Election Results 2010

Tara Said:

Why did the Democrats win in the Senate if they only won in 9 states?

We Answered:

The Democrats RETAINED a sufficient number of seats in the senate to have a majority. Only 1/3 of senate seats were up for election. Senators sit for 6 years. This means that the Democrat pick ups in traditionally Republican states such as Virginia and North Carolina won't be up for reelection until 2014.

I would not say that the Democrats "won" last night, but they managed to hold on if by a narrow margin. Still, the change in the house was not more pronounced than the 60+ Republican gain under Clinton and the 80+ gain immediately after FDR's Social Security Act of 1939. Clearly the Republicans changed the conversation in Washington and you can expect a very different next two years from the previous two. Expect Obama to start vetoing as Bush did when Republicans lost control during his term.

Peter Said:

How many Democrat run cities (or states) are bankrupt?

We Answered:

There are very few large successful Republican run cities too. So your sample is kind quite skewed. Republicans never saw any real success so they never fell when the economy fell. This is particularly true when you spread your net world wide.

Johnnie Said:

For GOP to take Senate need 10 - 2 more seats have moved towards GOP making 10 - will the GOP take a majority?

We Answered:

I can tell you for a fact that Specter will hold his seat in PA. The only reason he switched parties was because PA has closed primaries and had a decent shot of losing, but he will win the general easily.

The two best polling sites (538 and electoral vote.com) have the Dems easily holding their Senate majority.
