Because of the seats that are already Democratic but not up for reelection until 2012 or 2014. Only 1/3 of the Senate is up for election each election year, the existing 2/3 are added to those that were won yesterday. On the other side, all Congressional seats are up for grabs every 2 years.

The democrats stated with more seats not up for grab
They needed not to lose less ten seats
They did not
It's not how many seats they won
It's how many the gain or lost
I think they lose a seat they held as well as gain some

The house is up every two years

The senate wins a seat for 8 years
The whole senate is not up at the same time
