Bill C-16 was passed and received royal assent on May 3 2007. This act sets the fixed federal election date as the third Monday in October four years after election day of the last general election.

The first date for the fixed election process was October 19 2009 and it will be every four years unless the government loses the confidence of the House. In this case there would be an immediate election.

The reasons why Chief Electoral Officer would change the date would be if it turns out that the election day is a day of cultural or religious significance or if it conflicts with an election day for a municipality or province.

The alternate day would be either the Tuesday or the Monday after the Monday that would otherwise be election day.

I prefer Floating dates. Here in the United Kingdom, The Prime minister can only stay in office until the parliament loses confidence in him/her, something called a vote of no confidence. I think it is fairer because if they screw up you can have them kicked out unlike fixed date elections where they would be allowed to finish their term (unless they lie under oath like Bill Clinton, then they are removed for lying under oath). It is also better to have a general election all at the same time, instead of in sections like the USA. Instead of voting in some senators or congressmen in portions, it makes more sense to elect the whole body the same night. People always say the US governtment has a better system, but i prefer the UK's. It seems much fairer. Jim Bay: You don't need proof of citizenship, the government send your ballot paper to your house and only citizens get them. My friend is from California and he's not allowed to vote, and he had lived here since 1998. Even though he is classed as a citizen here, he still cannot vote. I dunno maybe non citizens can vote there but it would be extremely hard to vote without the right here.

It will be the first weekend of December, the 1-12-07, now that Howard has waited this long to announce it. Last week i was backing nov 24th, but now its moved forward one more week because the idiot wont let go.
