Federal Election Voting

Lucy Said:

Australians: Will you be voting for the Labor-green alliance at the next Federal or State election?

We Answered:

I don't know.

I'm inclined to start my own political party and go in opposition to Labor AND the Liberals.

Jackie Said:

What happens to Donkey Votes in a federal election?

We Answered:

Provided the person voting places one and only one of each number starting with one and then two and three and four and not omitting any number until all the candidates have a number beside them then it is a valid vote. It is just unlucky for the person at the top or the bottom. They get the last preference. Yes donkey votes can go either way. Top down or bottom up.

However, if the voter writes outside the squares or misses a number the vote is invalid. These are informal or invalid votes according to the Australian Electoral Commission.

Chester Said:

Can someone who does not file federal taxes vote in a federal election?

We Answered:

US citizen, over 18, is the only requirement.

Miguel Said:

Its my first time voting, can someone help me with the federal election.?

We Answered:

oooh.. this is my daughter's first election also .. and what I can say to you is what I said to her..

" I can't tell you who to vote for".... well I could.. but personally I don't think I should.

I can't even really answer your question , because what I write WILL be extremely biased.. and you need to do your own independent research on which you will obtain information that you can base your vote one...

What i DO suggest you do .. is think about issues that concern you .. whether it's the environment , the rights and freedoms of people, Fiscal responsibility and then go and see where each party stands on those things and possibly base your vote on that.

I have STRONG opinions on this election.. and I could go into a rant about them and try and encourage you to vote for the reasons I will be... BUT You're a first time voter who doesn't need other people to influence your vote... follow my advice in the previous paragraph and decide for yourself

good luck.

Felicia Said:

When the US votes in a federal election, who do they actually vote for? Congressman or President?

We Answered:

Both - unlike in parliamentary democracies such as Canada - where the leader (Prime Minister) is elected by the legislature - in the United States the leader (President, in our case) is elected separately from the legislature. Thus it's possible (and common) to have a President whose party does not control the legislature.

Thus, a ballot in the United States will have a line for the Presidential race and a separate line to pick your Congressman.

Rachel Said:

Who should I vote for in the federal election?

We Answered:

You'll find more parties are involved in the upper house (senate) ballot than the lower house (house of reps). There is a greater likelihood of smaller parties wining a seat in the senate.

Other big small parties would include Christian Democratic Party (preferences to Liberal), One Nation, Family First (preferences to Liberal) and Independents.

go here : http://www.aec.gov.au/election/

select your state and where you live. It will list the candidates for your area.

Also in the State level you can view the senators running (senators are selected at a state level), and MPs are elected at a electorate level.

Discuss It!
