Yes, I agree with your thesis. The Republican Congress backed him totally, and the party was repudiated along with Bush.

The Republicans now have to regroup. When the Democrats lost big in 1980, they nominated Mondale, who espoused old-school liberalism. Mondale was crushed. If the Republicans nominate a hard-core conservative - strong military actions, deregulation, and Christianist policies (no gay rights, no abortion), they will go down to defeat. The financial crisis has turned the public away from the free-market types, conclusively.

The Republicans got a chance to implement their ideology, and look where it has left us.

To some extent, the situation you describe is typical of parties which have just lost an election. The party leaders are discredited and often nobody is clearly ready to step in to take their place. This certainly described the Democratic Party after losses to Reagan and both Bushes. Clinton and Obama were certainly not seen at the time as the next great Democratic leader. So we can have some confidence that new Republican voices will emerge in time.

The greater challenge is the ever-shrinking philosophical tent the Republican Party lives under. If the party continues to identify itself in terms of what it is against, there is little reason for people to support it, other than the small minority for whom abortion and gay marriage are urgent issues. We await younger Republicans who can articulate a broader, more-inclusive vision that is still in keeping with basic Republican principles. Stay tuned.

Ultraconservative, Christian conservative, Moderate, Liberal.No definitions needed.By the way I think the term "Neocon" is overtly racist, as it is generally linked to one ethnic group within the party, and is used by covertly racist liberals as a way to vent their hatred towards this group in what they think is a socially acceptable manner. I know it's not considered cool to talk about racism unless...but I digress.
