Question About The GOP And Social Security? We Answered:
NO I don't agree...I would be better off if I HAD CONTROL OF MY MONEY, not the government...
Giving money and power to government is like giving booze and car keys to a teenager.

Why do people on the left think the GOP wants to eliminate Social Security? We Answered:
"Privitizing" social security is the same as "shutting it down."Back in the 1930's during the Great Depression, the Democrats were in favor of Social Security as a way to provide some assistance for the elderly retired. The Republicans were against it. Actually, the President at the time (Roosevelt) didn't think too much of the idea himself. However, national unemployment was up around 25% and nobody had any sort of $$$ to fall back on, and a lot of Americans were voting for Communists and Socialists. The Democrats knew that if they didn't compromise and vote for some of the social programs the Socialists were in favor of, then we'd have rioting in the streets (as was occurring in Europe) and possibly an overthrow of the US government.
Social Security was born in tough economic times, and was intended to be a partial benefit for people who had lived longer than the usual lifespan. In the ensuing decades, politicians have greatly expanded its benefits, and the cost is much much higher than it was originally intended.
Some people say that if Social Security is privatized then all the $$$ will be invested in the stock market, and the flood of $$$ will artificially raise all the stock prices to the point where everything will be overvalued.
Other people say that Social Security $$$ should be invested in US infrastructure to enable more US productivity to allow more economic activity to be taxed later to support the people who are on Social Security.
I won't say whether I'm in favor of it or not, but without some method to provide economic relief to people living in poverty, they'll be open for communism or worse.
It's not a simple problem. The best way to attempt to solve the problem is to do so with good intentions and honesty on all sides of the problem.
