Good question. I have never heard of a "common" National nickname for the DP. I think that long ago it was just understood that if you weren't talking about the GOP, then you meant Democrats.

But times should catch up because now there are Libertarians, Independents, (I can't keep up with the rest). So it may be time that they come up with their own nick-name B4 any other party "brands" them with one they don't like.

As a side note, I remember being very confused as a child about who the GOP was. I knew Grand OLD Party, but I figured the opposite was called Grand OTHER Party. So I never knew if GOP meant Rep. or Dem.

They don't have one. GOP does indeed stand for Grand Ole Party.

The DNC is the DNC, a committee within the party, not the party itself.

GOP used to mean "Gallant Old Party." This "old party" idea is a reference to the ideology around which the Republican Party was formed - they considered themselves advocates of the old ideas, not these new-fangled big-government do-gooders. And they were formed with several other "old parties" as well. Republicans actually were anti-slavery. Democrats had the problem of dealing with slavery and at the same time holding onto their power base and of holding the nation together, so they tended to constantly soft-pedal and compromise and delay on slavery issues. This did not help get rid of slavery, but it doesn't mean they were pro-slavery either. Not that being anti-slavery and doing nothing about it is excusable.

I really think they should change GOP to GOB. Maybe we could put all the career politicians in there from both sides of the isle. Good Ol Boys (and gals). Really not much difference between any of em anymore.
