Why did Hatch and others in the GOP support the individual mandate in 1993?We Answered:
It's pretty hilarious. Grassley actually justified his flipping on this by saying that he never really gave any thought to the 1993 bill or what was in it. Orrin Hatch, who also now claims to bleive the individual mandate is unconstitutional after supporting it, has said the same thing. For once,a Republican excuse that I actually believe.Remember, this bill is the only comprehensive health care bill introduced by Republicans in the past 40 years. It was introduced only as an alternative to the Clinton plan, and allowed to die as soon as its supporters were confident that the Clinton plan was history. The fact that its own co-sponsors now claim they didn't know or care what was in it should tell you how sincere Republicans are when they say they're eager to replace the Obama bill just as soon as they repeal it.
