I think you are exactly right. I live in the Southern part of the USA and had many Republican friends in South Carolina who voted from Obama in the primaries...thinking that America would not possibly elect a black person as President....and hoping to cost Hillary the Presidency by doing so.

Oddly enough, they would be insulted past bearing if one suggested to them that their voting in the Democratic primaries for the last Presidential election actually resulted in being a great thing for the country.

I suppose that one might say that if the Republicans of South Carolina are AGAINST something, every one else should vote FOR it....because it is surely a thing that will do the country a whole lot of good.

The Bush campaign, under the guidance of Karl Rove, spread the rumor that McCain had fathered an illegitimate black child. Voters were polled on the fake issue in the South Carolina primary campaign. The child of course had actually been adopted by the McCains from Bangladesh. It is the dirtiest campaign tactic ever used in modern US politics.

McCain nevertheless supported Bush thereafter and began to parrot Bush policies.
