Tough question. Seeing as how Koresh surrounded himself with Innocents to use as human shields, I think the only thing we could've done different- was COMPLETELY seal off the compound (no water, no electricity, no info. going in or out), allow no one in & no one back in , -and then just waited them out for as long as it took. THAT way, even if they all eventually starved to death- he wouldn't have taken any additional lives the way he did in the end...- & maybe wouldn't have attained the degree martyrdom stattus he gainned in the end.

Our educational system has taught a whole generation that it is more important to feel, than to think, that Patriotism is racist, winning is selfish, and most damaging to the examples you cite, that people have an inherent right to the same things everyone else has, including their money.
We spend more money per student than almost any other country, and the test scores keep falling. Which is amazing, given the fact that you can't flunk anyone anymore. All you can do is redefine their IEP, but they stay enrolled, and the school still gets the per capita money for them from the state. So you end up with a whole generation that has no idea that failing is a very real option in life.
The end result is a country full of self-centered, materialistic, envious, and gullible people, who have a grossly over-rated sense of their own expertise and entitlement.
