Actually there were a multitude of things that caused Rome to fall and liberalism wasn't one of them. Overtaxing of the middle and working classes, the rich didn't pay taxes and became very lethargic and debaucherous in their lives. Constant war against its neighbors, because the economy of Rome depended heavily on a looting mentality, i.e, no domestic source of supplies, the loss of their manufacturing capabilities, and the increase in religion and its zealotry prevented them from exploring science and developing new technologies.

Marxism is basically the same as communism, as Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote "The Communist Manifesto". What Marx proposed was a workers' revolution leading to a society where everything is in the hands of the workers, there is no private property so there is no need for money, and everyone owns everything jointly. As we know, this always leads to dictatorship simply because human nature isn't like that - for it to work, everyone has to want to work and contribute to society just because it's the right thing to do and not for any reward or pay.

Socialism is sort of halfway towards it. Socialist countries are democratic and have a degree of capitalism, but believe in "big government" and government ownership of all key industries for the benefit of all. Socialists naturally differ on how far government ownership should go. What usually goes with it is a belief in social security and welfare, though that is not a necessary part of socialism. Many European countries are more or less like this.

Libertarianism is pretty much the opposite - believing that ideally there should be no government at all and we can all do as we please with complete liberty. Of course we need SOME government or else who would punish murderers, for example? But it should be as little as possible.

Liberalism and Conservatism are the slippery ones to define. Liberalism in the original sense of the word means something close to libertarianism, but because the Liberal Party in Britain used the name and they are not exactly libertarian, it's used to mean their kind of policies. Both are somewhere between socialism and libertarianism. They believe in the same basic structure of society - democracy, capitalism and all that goes with it - but liberals are more inclined to liberal attitudes on social matters and making social security and welfare available to people who need it, while conservatives stand by traditional attitudes on social matters and are less enthusiastic about "big government".

Neither one of those is a party. Liberal is to the left of center and conservative is to the right.
