Define Liberal Arts

Eddie Said:

How do you define "Liberal Arts"?

We Answered:

I have a Liberal Studies degree. I will be first person to say that it means that someone couldn't stay focused enough on a "real" major. My concentrations were in business and comp sci - a degree in either would have been great, but 6 1/2 years going for a bachelors led me to "Liberal Studies." Eh, but it is what it is.

Hector Said:

What's the best way for a guy with a liberal arts degree to get rich?

We Answered:

When you get a good answer to this question, please email me. I would also like to get rich without having to obtain a higher education.

In all seriousness, some kind of business manager type position might work. You'd have to start out at the ground level of a beginning business that turned wildly sucessful, and that's really just a lot of luck involved. Liberal arts degrees are known for thieir relative uselessness. They give you a great generalized background, but you really need a graduate degree in something specific to make a career out of it.

Harold Said:

Can you help me define my intended college major?

We Answered:

Either Humanities or Liberal Arts would be acceptable. Communications is a specific discipline that does not imply foreign languages.

Terrence Said:

What would be some example of a 2nd tier school? What ranking does a 2nd tier have in National-Doc?

We Answered:

Just assume 51 and down. It's a matter of semantics. They break down 3rd and 4th tier. So, you can read into the "top" tier as consisting of both 1st and 2nd tier. They just didn't want to separate it out for some reason.

Eva Said:

What is a "liberal arts college" and how is it different from any other college or university?

We Answered:

A liberal arts college focuses on the "liberal arts", based on the muses and used as curriculum guide in times before modern colleges. The topics are
1. grammar
2. rhetoric
3. logic
4. geometry
5. arithmetic
6. music
7. astronomy

Decent schools for the most part.
If you get a major in the liberal arts you have gone through and mastered those seven subjects.

St. Johns College is a very good liberal arts college

Liberal Arts Math Help!!?

We Answered:

Hi,

1.Define your variables. You want to work things out so that you only have one variable in an equation. Hint: Let a = adult ticket price. In other words, you must be able to define the price of a child's ticket in terms of the adult ticket price.

Child's ticket price in the family plan = a - 8

2.Write one equation using the variables above that shows the total of the family of four equaling $155.80.

2a + 2(a - 8) = 155.80

2a + 2a - 16 = 155.80

4a - 16 = 155.80

4a = 171.80

a = $42.95 for an adult ticket
a - 8 = $34.95 for a child's ticket

There are two adults and two children. Write and solve the equation make sure to show all of your work.

Answer: Adult ticket price is $ 42.95 and Child’s ticket price is $ 34.95

I hope that helps!! :-)

How would you define a Liberal Arts College?

We Answered:

Liberal arts is short for Liberal Arts and Sciences.

These schools generally do not have graduate programs, so they really focus on the undergraduates. They differ from major research universities, because while the professors DO research, they do not care more about their research than their students. Classes are smaller, and professors are more available to their students. And as Bill said the curriculum is more open. You have more electives and are encouraged to explore different disciplines.

LAC's are great, but I prefers smaller sized universities with a STRONG college of arts and sciences, but the resources of graduate schools and prestige of the research of its professors. At these schools a classical education is also encouraged and you have a wide variety of classes at your fingertips.

In my opinion, these are the best educational environments because you get the best of BOTH worlds. The huge state school/major research university and very small liberal arts college.

Examples of these smaller universities are Dartmouth College (which I love of course), any of the other ivies, university of chicago, vanderbilt, dook, rice, northwestern etc.

Liberal arts colleges are schools like amherst, williams, and davidson.
