There's just the slightest chance that Psychology Today's readership has a liberal slant and such an article helps promote their magazine. These magazines know who buys their product so it's just good business to tell them how smart they are for reading Psychology Today. I have little doubt that if their readership was primarily conservative the would be publishing articles about how much smarter conservatives are.

Liberal arts is fine for the first year, you'll get your pre-reqs out of the way. Change it to something solid by the second year. If you still don't know, take a year off and do some travelling or volunteer work to find yourself.

We have a T-shirt in the Business Department:

If you want "just a job" study accounting, it'll open the most doors for you. Most accountants who get bored with the material become successful managers, and it allows to work in most industries. This is nice if you have no driving passions at this point.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad...and, personally, I think you are making a good choice in moving back home to spend more time with him.

So, my thoughts about school. The general rule of thumb is that the stronger and more rigorous your school is, the better your shot of getting into medical school will be...provided that you do well at that school. This isn't just reputation, although that does factor in (as in, if a med school has had success with students from your school, it helps you), but also because a tougher program will prepare you better for the MCAT. Some schools really prefer that premed prereqs be taken at a 4-year university and not a community college, and other med schools aren't quite as picky. Going to the better, more rigorous school would also help you in that you have a big GPA deficit to overcome...and transferring "down" in the face of bad grades could look to some admissions officers as if you simply could not handle university-level work (and therefore can't handle medical school). So in the end, my advice is try to get in to whatever is the "strongest" college close to home.

In terms of the transferring timing, I can't really help you there, other than to suggest you talk to advisors at your current school. Talk to the premed advisor...yes, even though you're leaving the school, they should be willing and able to help you considering your reasons for transferring. They can advise you on what is the better route to take and give you an idea of all the things you will need to do to prepare yourself for applying to med school...it's worth taking advantage of their advising on the whole process while you still have access to it.
